A Family’s Epic Adventure: 7 Weeks Exploring New Zealand’s North Island

When you decide to travel 20 hours on a plane with a two-year-old, you know it’s going to be an unforgettable journey.

As a family of three, we had a different kind of trip planned for our adventure in New Zealand.

With some pre-planning, we set our sights on driving all the way north, reaching Cape Reinga – a significant location where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet and a sacred place for the Maori people.

This would be a trip full of challenges and rewards, as we explored new places and enjoyed the beauty of nature.

Before setting off, we made a commitment to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Our home for the next 7 weeks would be a tent, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in nature.

Seeking solitude, the crashing waves, and breathtaking views, we ventured southwest from Cape Reinga along the 90-mile beach, an open highway of sand and freedom camping.

One of the highlights of our beach adventure was searching for mussels.

Additionally, the hiking trails at the northern end of the beach rewarded us with majestic views that left us in awe.

Despite the challenges of traveling with a young child, we embraced the opportunity to push our limits and create unforgettable memories as a family..
