Located on the border of Alberta, Canada and Montana, Waterton Lakes National Park is a popular summer destination with beautiful mountains, lakes, and wildlife.
However, during the winter months, most hotels, restaurants, and shops close down, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a winter wonderland and want to avoid the crowds, a visit to Waterton Lakes National Park is a perfect choice.
The drive from Calgary to the park usually takes around 2.5 hours, but weather conditions can affect travel time.
We experienced a snowstorm that extended our journey to 5 hours.
Despite the longer drive, reaching the park and seeing the “Welcome to Waterton Lakes National Park” sign covered in fresh snow was a magical moment.
During our stay, we chose to stay at the Waterton Glacier Suites, one of the few hotels open during the winter.
We learned that just the day before our arrival, there was no snow on the ground.
The town was quiet, with only four people staying that night, providing a peaceful and intimate experience.
The next day, as the sun peeked through the clouds, we set out to explore the winter wonders of the park.
Although the visitor center was closed for the season, we found our first trailhead near it.
Bear’s Hump, known for its breathtaking panoramas, was transformed into a snowshoe trek, offering the same stunning views.
With no other visitors around, we had the trail to ourselves, enjoying the untouched snow and capturing beautiful photos.
With over 200km of trails to choose from, deciding on our next adventure was a bit challenging.
We opted for the popular Bertha Lakes, which offers stunning views of Upper Waterton Lake and the frozen Cameron Falls.
The trailhead is conveniently located at the edge of town, making it easily accessible.
Exploring Waterton Lakes National Park in winter is a unique and rewarding experience.
